The Good, Bad and Ugly of Megachurches |

Wondering where all the young single adults in your church have gone? If you're the pastor of a small- or medium-size congregation, you may want to check the nearest megachurch.
That's because singles are three times as likely to attend a megachurch and make up one-third of those churches' congregations, according to a study by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research that surveyed nearly 25,000 people at 12 megachurches throughout the country. The report also discovered that two-thirds of megachurch regulars are under the age of 45, with the average person being 40 years old. Although two West Coast megachurches are transitioning to new senior pastors, congregants of each church don't have to worry about any unfamiliarity with the incoming leaders.
At the Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, Calif., founder Robert H. Schuller announced this week that he's turning over the leadership of the 10,000-member megachurch to his oldest daughter, 58-year-old Sheila Schuller Coleman. Coleman, a former schoolteacher, has been serving as the church's director of family ministries, in addition to overseeing its schools and children's and youth ministries. Though the transition was announced Sunday night and is effective immediately, Coleman says she never expected to lead the church. "Our church didn't even start ordaining women until 1973," she said. "I'm proud of my dad for doing this, and I hope I can serve as a role model for younger women who want to get things accomplished in this church." ... Read more
