Can Marketing Save Denominations?
imageWe often highlight churches or ministries relying on creative marketing tactics to generate community buzz, garner media attention or attract new faces. Now leaders of entire denominations are looking to marketing to solve some ever-growing problems.

After seeing a 25 percent decline in an already aging membership, the United Methodist Church recently launched a $20 million marketing initiative to stop the bleeding—and promote a "24-7 experience" of church life. Over the next four years, the "Rethink Church" campaign will attempt to attract younger members by advertising various ways Methodist churches can play a part of everyday community life, from developing youth sports leagues to helping out with inner-city ministry... Authorities Apologize for Bible Study Clampdown
If authorities knocked on your door and asked whether you held a Bible study in your home, you might be in China or North Korea. If they began probing to find out whether you sang worship songs or uttered the phrase "Praise the Lord," you might be in Iran or Sudan. But two months ago, officials in San Diego County did just that to a California pastor, ordering him and his wife to stop a home-group Bible study until they obtained a permit.

On Wednesday, county representatives rescinded the previous cease and desist order and apologized to David Jones and his wife, Mary, who were told they could be fined $100 to $1,000 if they continued the Bible studies... Read more
